Delivering Results – Stalk Trimming
Over several years we have improved the stalk cutting facility on the Gamechangers. This has been a significant challenge as the space available is very limited.
Accurate stalk trimming can add significantly to increasing the crop yield. 1mm of stalk has a weight equivalent of around 1% of the weight of a mushroom. An increased stalk length of 5mm equates to an increase of 5% yield. Inaccurately cut stalks cost money.
If stalks are cut short or at an angle, valuable weight is lost. If stalks are cut too long, customers like supermarkets can reject the product if the stalk length sits outside the length specified in the contract.
Accurate stalk cutting can reduce the number of mushrooms in the punnet to attain the required weight. It could mean at least 1 less mushroom in each punnet.
Good straight, uniform stalk lengths help to improve the look of the mushrooms to retail customers.
The main features of the stalk trimming system are:
a) The length of the stalk can be easily varied by turning the knob at the front of the Gamechanger.
b) The cutting blade angle can be varied as required to ensure a straight cut.
c) The blade system is basically self-cleaning as each cut wipes the blade clean.
d) There is easy access to the blade for cleaning and the blade system can be removed easily if required.
e) The blade system is designed so it helps keep the mushrooms firmly in the back of the cups on the belt.
f) The cut stalks fall into the large bin below which can be emptied in seconds.
By using the Gamechanger, producers can improve yield and improve the look of their product.
